Word Families Activities: Orthographic Mapping Template
What is Orthographic Mapping?
Orthographic mapping is the process by which skilled readers learn to recognize words by sight and store them in their mental lexicon, or mental dictionary. It involves creating a connection between the visual form of a word (its orthography) and its sound (its phonology) and meaning (its semantics). Orthographic mapping is an important component of the reading process, as it allows us to quickly and accurately recognize words, which is necessary for efficient reading comprehension.
